Current sources only provide us with three mentions relating to the previous existence of this Funeral March, and these in the correspondence between Berlin-based music publisher Robert Lienau and Dvořák dating from the year 1879. E.g., on 2 July Lienau writes: “You have sent me the following: 1 trio, 1 piano quartet, 1 string quartet, 1 string quintet, 1 funeral march, 1 concerto for piano. Of these I would like to acquire for my publishing house the first three items, namely the piano trio and quartet, and the string quartet. I am not considering the publication of the funeral march.”
