In the summer of 1893 Dvořák noted down two themes together with the note “Sonata Cello and Piano”, but the sonata was never realised. The first of the themes was later modified as the leitmotif for Rusalka in the opera of the same name. The composer used the second in the scherzo of his String Quintet in E flat major.
