Dvořák wrote down a number of musical ideas in one of his American sketchbooks, covering several pages, evidently intended for two string quartets, which he marks as “A Quartett” and “B Quartett E minor”. Neither of the quartets ever appeared, however, one of the themes he wrote down was later used in the middle section of the second movement of his String Quintet in E flat major.
